Sefer Daniel: Part 25 - Perek 11 cont'd: Gog U'Magog
And at the time of the End, the king of the south will spar with him, and the king of the north will storm on him with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships, and he will enter countries, and will flood and pass through."
Gavriel now prophesizes what will be at the end of days. This is referring to the war of Gog and Magog. The king of the north will come to conquer Yerushalayim, passing through Arab countries with his armies, and the king of the south will fight him.
The Malbim notes that this nevuah is similar to the nevuah in Yechezkal about the end of days.
It is unclear and subject to many interpretations which countries are represented by the "north" and the "south." In fact, all prophecies and details of the end of days are obscure and difficult to interpret, and will only be elucidated with the coming of Moshiach.
"And he will enter Eretz Yisrael, and many will stumble. And these will be saved from his hand - Edom, Moav, and the first of Bnei Amon."
"Many will stumble" - Many countries of the East will stumble, and be too weak to stand before him; only Edom and Moav will escape from his hand. The Ibn Ezra says that the possuk is not referring to the original nations of Edom, Moav, and Amon, but to the people who now live in those lands.
"And he will send forth his hand into lands, and the land of Egypt will not survive.
And he will control the gold reserves, and the silver, and all of the desirable commodities of Egypt, and the Lubim and Kushim in his footsteps."
"And he will send forth his hand" - to steal and loot.
"The Lubim and Kushim" - The king of the north will conquer Egypt as well as other nearby countries. The Malbim again notes the similarity of this nevuah to that of Yechezkel, where the destruction of Egypt during this time period is also foretold.
"And news will frighten him from the east and the north, and he will go out in great rage to destroy and eradicate many."
"And news will frighten him" - Nearby countries will be aroused to wage war on behalf of their neighbor.
"And he will pitch his palace tents between the seas and the holy mountain (Eretz Yisrael), and he will come to his end, and no one will help him."
This is referring to the war of Gog and Magog.
