Elul: Beat The Heat
Most of us at some point during the year have heard news that made us open up a Tehilim and pour our hearts out for some divine help. Had we had a chance to do it two days before the bad news actually transpired we would have felt very fortunate to have been able to daven in order to help avoid it.
During the winter many years ago a young man caught a cold. His condition rapidly deteriorated and within a week he was dead. All the people were amazed that just one week ago he caught a cold and now he was already dead. Reb Chaim Shmeulevitz corrected them saying that he actually caught the cold months before in Mussaf on Rosh HaShana when his fate was decreed.
The Mishna Berura says (581:3) that during Elul it is a Minhag to say 10 perakim of Tehilim each day finishing Tehilim twice before Rosh HaShana. One perek of heartfelt Tehilim before the tzara strikes is worth far more than many perakim after, since it takes special emunah to say it before while every desperate soul has the common sense to say it after. Like Yirmiyahu told the Bnei Yisroel on the river banks of Bavel who cried to return to Eretz Yisroel, "Had you cried these tears while you were still in Eretz Yisroel you would have never been exiled."
Now in Elul we have our chance. Let's grab it.
