Elul: Bnei Yisaschar - The Beating From Within
Did you ever notice that children pick up and run without any reason for doing so. Extra energy within a child can make him takeoff without any conscious reason. In Elul Hashem plants within each Jew the drive and desire to do Teshuva even if we don't realize it. Our energy level is upped a notch as our heart's pound to a different beat.
The Bnei Yisaschar says there is a Remez for this in the pasuk Shmos (21:13) "V'HaElokim Ina Liyado V'Smati Lecha Makon. " When someone murders by accident the Torah tells us "Hashem made it happen and I will make for you a place of refuge" (Arei Miklat - protection from the vengeance of the victims family). The first letters of the pasuk spell the word Elul. All year long you need to initiate the requisite regret and yearning for Hashem that proper teshuva requires but in Elul hints the pasuk, "Hashem makes it happen" he ignites a flame within your heart so that you naturally come to teshuva. The last letters equal 41 or the numerical value of Mother (Eim). That explains the second part of the pasuk. Our mother in heaven who yearns for our return says "I have provide you a place of refuge" from your aveiros.
Hashem paved the way home. All we need to do is pay attention to the call from within and get up and go. Because in Elul home is where we really want to be.
