The Jewish Press www.jewishpress.com
A Weekly Educational and Informational Resource
An Overview by Rochelle Caviness - August 26, 2004
The Jewish Press is an English-language weekly newspaper that bills itself as "America's Largest Independent Jewish Weekly Newspaper" and I know of no reason to disagree with this statement. For anyone interest in Jewish affairs and Israel, this newspaper is a must read. Covering just about every conceivable topic from the Jewish settlements in Gush Katif to what's happening in 'Jewish' Miami, and from the weekly Torah portion to a kids sections complete with jokes, educational stories, and cartoons, this newspaper offers something for everyone.
The information presented in The Jewish Press comes from a predominantly religious (orthodox) and pro-Israeli perspective. It is published in New York, where the bulk of the papers readers are located. Consequently, they devote considerable space to the issues that are of interest to the Jewish community in New York. However, The Jewish Press is international in scope, covering news from around the globe with a 'Jewish' slant.
The Jewish Press is a phenomenal news resource, and it often contains important new stories that were overlooked or misrepresented by the main-line media. In addition to traditional news coverage, this newspaper also contains a wealth of columns by such notables as Rebbetzin Jungreis, Menachem Porush, and Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss. You'll also find columns covering topics such as emunah, morality, shidduchim, and Torah studies such as Expounding the Torah by Rabbi Abraham Stone.
Although technically 'just' a newspaper, The Jewish Press is much more. Averaging more than 90 pages, this newspaper serves as an authoritative educational resource for both children and adults, via its various columns, it provides helpful advice on everything from infertility and family issues, to halachic issues. They also publish serialized versions of books, provide historical information related to Judaism and various Jewish communities throughout time, and even provide some Jewish-centric sports information. The Jewish Press is also an excellent resource for staying informed about what is going on in the world that is important to, or which might affect, Jews around the world.
