Susie Fishbein's famed Kosher by Design cookbook series began with one book, which is aptly named: Kosher by Design: Picture-Perfect Food for the Holidays and Every Day. This cookbook is suited for cooks of every skill level, and it is accompanied by mouth-watering photographs of the completed dishes. The photography in this book is by John Uher. In total there are more than 250, must-try recipes in this marvelous cookbook that will enhance any holiday celebration, or just dinner with the family.
Many of the dishes in this cookbook are elegant and sophisticated, such as the Two-Toned Sweet Pea & Carrot Soup which can be served in half of a hollowed-out baby pumpkin (it is delicious by the way). Other dishes can be classified more along the lines of cozy, home cooking classics, such as Pot Roast, Cholent, and Potato Kugel. In addition, the recipes in this collection are diverse and international in scope, and best of all, they are well suited for both everyday and holiday use.
The recipes in this collection are organized by food category, such as appetizers, soups, salads, poultry, meat, fish, pasta & dairy, side dishes, Passover specific recipes (including a handy chart which will help you to adjust many standard recipes so that they will be Kosher for Pesach), and desserts. In addition, interspersed throughout the cookbook are short sections on various holidays, namely and Yom Tov categories, such as Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, Erev Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Chanukah, Tu B'shavat, Purim, Passover, and Shavuot. In this Yom Tov section, Fishbein provides tips on entertaining for each different holidays, as well as offering menu and decorating suggestions, along with interesting tidbits of information about each holiday. She also provides guidance as to which wines are best matched with the various dishes in the cookbook. Cooking tips and advice, as well as information on keeping a Kosher kitchen are also provided.
Kosher by Design, along with its companion volumes, is the premier gourmet series of Kosher cookbooks in existence. Fishbein's recipes are easy to follow and use, for the most part, commonly found ingredients. Cooks of all skill levels will find dishes to meet their skill sets, and even novice cooks will discover that with just a little practice that they can create even the more difficult dishes in this cookbook. Best of all, you don't need any special equipment to create these dishes. Most cooks will find that they already have all the necessary equipment in their kitchen.
The Kosher by Design cookbook is a must-have addition to every kitchen, and it will make an outstanding gift for newlyweds, children going away to college, and any cook who does not already have a copy!
