Igros Moshe: Garments That Are Made From Synthetic Material Are NOT Obligated in Tzitzis

Garment made from synthetic materials are similar in Halacha to leather garment because both can be made into garment without making them into threads and weaving them together. Leather garments are not obligated in Tzitzis because only garment that are made from threads that are woven together are obligated in Tzitzis. Even if one does make threads out of leather and weaves them into a garment it will not be obligated in Tzitzis since it would have been possible to make the garment without weaving.

Consequently garments that are made from synthetic material are no different than leather and are also not obligated in Tzitzis. Since it is possible to make a garment from a synthetic material without weaving it together even if the garment was made out of synthetic threads that are woven together it would not be obligated in Tzitzis.

There are other opinions on the matter and Rav Moshe's opinion in not universally held.

Important Note: We try to convey the Tshuva to the best of our ability. We admit that our understanding may not be accurate. Please also understand that this Tshuva may not be the final word on this topic. One should consult a Rav before drawing any conclusions.
