Unscrupulous Kohanim

The Gemorrah in Yoma (9a)states that in the period of the first Bais Hamikdash (the first Temple), which stood for 410 years, there were only 18 Kohanim Gedolim serving in it. But during Bais Sheni (the second Temple), which stood for 420 years , more than 300 Kohanim Gedolim served in it.This was because the Kohanim Gedolim died before they lived out a year in office. The reason for this was, because unscrupulous Kohanim were put in to office by buying the Kehunah for money. The Zohar tells us that a golden rope was tied to the foot of the Kohain Gadol in order to pull him out of the Kodesh Hakodashim, if he were to die there on Yom Kipper.

Eligible Bachelors

Daas Zekainim MiBaalai HaTosfos says that Nadav and Avihu were killed because they never wanted to get married. They claimed that no woman was worthy enough for them. Their father was the Kohen Gadol, their uncle was Moshe, the King of Klal Yisroel, their mother's brother was Nachshon Ben Aminadav, the Nasi of Shevet Yehudah, and they were Kohanim Hedyotim. They therefore never got married and died without children.
