A group of parents from Congregation Netivot Shalom in Berkeley, California developed a special program called Shabbat b'Yachad (Shabbat Together). This program was designed to introduce young children to the morning Shabbat service and to provide an opportunity for the entire family to fully participate in the service. In addition to producing the Siddur Shabbat B'Yachad prayerbook for young children, they also created a leader's guide that is an invaluable tool for anyone desirous of leading a Shabbat b'Yachad service, or in creating their own children's service.

This leader's guide is keyed to the Siddur Shabbat B'Yachad, and provides a wealth of information on just about everything from funding a children's prayer service program to teaching tips on how to explain, in kid friendly terms, the various aspects of the service and the prayers. You'll also find tips on telling Torah stories to young children and tips on how to organize a service to best meet your audience's needs and time restraints. Two program outlines are included, one for children birth to age five and one for children in kindergarten through second grade. Also included with the Leader's Guide is a wonderful music CD, keyed to the Siddur, that contains both prayers and songs. Most of the songs and prayers on this CD are performed by Julie Batz, a very talented female singer, who is accompanied at times by a group (choir) of young children. My kids enjoyed listening to, and singing along with this CD, even before seeing the Siddur!

The information in the Leader's Guide is organized into four main sections,
  1. Getting Started
  2. Leader's Guide
  3. Prayer Service Guidelines
  4. Telling Torah Stories to Children
Included is a bibliography on books about prayer and resources for Torah Stories. An online resource guide is also included that directs readers toward Torah related sites from many persuasions. Leaders Guide for Siddur Shabbat B'Yachad is a practical resource for anyone seeking to lead or organize a Shabbat B'Yachad prayer service. It is also an excellent guide for anyone seeking to develop a similar program in their synagogue.
